Loans can serve an important role in your plan to pay for college.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loans are available from the state and federal as well as private lenders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you take out a student loan, you must pay it back\u2014<strong>even if you don&#8217;t complete your education.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You should explore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/financial-aid\/paying-for-college\/scholarships\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"21\">scholarships<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/financial-aid\/paying-for-college\/grants\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"23\">grants<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/financial-aid\/paying-for-college\/work-study\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"24\">part-time work<\/a> to pay for college before you turn to student loans.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you do need student loans, that\u2019s ok too. Student loans don\u2019t have to be an overwhelming burden if you borrow only what you need and follow a plan to pay them back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your financial aid award letter will list the federal loans that you&#8217;re eligible for. You may also see an \u201coptional loan program limit\u201d on your award letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you need additional loan funds beyond your federal amounts, you may apply for an optional loan up to this stated limit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can accept any or all the federal loans you&#8217;re offered. You can also choose whether to take out the full loan amount or just part of the money you could borrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before your federal loans are processed, all first-time borrowers must complete the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\" target=\"_blank\">Master Promissory Note (MPN)<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/entrance-counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\">entrance counseling<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of Student Loans<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block accordion\">\n        <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Federal_Subsidized_and_Unsubsidized_Direct_Loans\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Federal_Subsidized_and_Unsubsidized_Direct_Loans\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Federal Subsidized &amp; Unsubsidized Direct Loans        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>Subsidized and unsubsidized loans are federal student loans for eligible students to help cover the cost of higher education. You must be enrolled at least half-time (6 credits for undergraduate students and 3 credits for graduate students) to receive federal loans. These are the most common loans WSU students receive.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/subsidized-unsubsidized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Direct Subsidized Loans<\/a> are available to undergraduate students who have financial need. You <strong>don&#8217;t need to make payments<\/strong> while you&#8217;re in school or during the 6-month grace period after you graduate. <strong>Interest will not accrue <\/strong>during this time either.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/subsidized-unsubsidized\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Direct Unsubsidized Loans<\/a> are available to eligible undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. You <strong>don&#8217;t need to make payments<\/strong> while you&#8217;re in school or during the 6-month grace period after you graduate. <strong>But interest will accrue <\/strong>and be added to the principal amount of your loan.<\/p>\n<p>To apply for a federal direct student loan, you first need to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a> (FAFSA). Then you&#8217;ll be offered a loan amount in your official award letter in <a href=\"https:\/\/eservices.minnstate.edu\/esession\/authentication.do?campusId=074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Student eServices<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You choose whether to accept your federal loans and how much money you wish to borrow. If you are a first-time borrower, you will complete <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/entrance-counseling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">entrance counseling<\/a> and sign a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master Promissory Note<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Make sure that you accept your loans before the semester begins, so your money is disbursed to pay your tuition bill in time.<\/p>\n<p>Direct loan funds can only be held for 3 days, so let the Financial Aid Office know if you&#8217;ll be late registering for classes. This will make sure your loan funds aren&#8217;t returned and your loan isn\u2019t cancelled.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Federal_PLUS_Loan_\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Federal_PLUS_Loan_\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Federal PLUS Loan         <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/plus\/parent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PLUS Parent Loans<\/a> are federal loans that parents take out to help pay for the education of their dependent undergraduate students.<\/p>\n<p>Graduate students can borrow using <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/plus\/grad\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Direct PLUS Loans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You or your student will need to complete the <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/h\/apply-for-aid\/fafsa\">Free Application for Federal Student Aid<\/a> (FAFSA) to apply for these loans. You&#8217;ll also sign a <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/mpn\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Master Promissory Note <\/a>and complete a new <a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/plus-app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PLUS Loan application<\/a> every time you want to borrow.<\/p>\n<p>PLUS Loans require a credit check and credit approval. If you&#8217;re denied the PLUS Parent Loan, please contact the Financial Aid Office, as there may be other ways to help you.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"accordion__item\" data-animation=\"fade-in-up\" data-animate=\"true\">\n        <button id=\"Private_Educational_Loans\" class=\"accordion__toggle\" title=\"Private_Educational_Loans\" aria-pressed=\"false\">\n            Private Educational Loans        <\/button>\n        <div class=\"accordion__content\">\n            <p>If you have exhausted free money (grants and scholarships), and state and federal financial aid (work study and loans), it may be time to consider a private educational loan.<\/p>\n<p>Private educational loans are student loans offered through private lenders, usually a bank or credit union. Private loans require a credit check and credit approval.<\/p>\n<p>Students typically need a credit-worthy co-signer. As with any type of private loan, the co-signer will take on the debt if the student doesn&#8217;t make payments.<\/p>\n<p>Private student loans aren&#8217;t eligible for any federal loan repayment options. The private lender sets the terms and schedule for repayment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WSU doesn&#8217;t endorse specific lenders or loan products<\/strong>. Please contact the lender directly for the terms and conditions of the loans.<\/p>\n<p>Learn more about applying for a private educational loan and compare loan options at <a href=\"https:\/\/choice.fastproducts.org\/FastChoice\/home\/239400\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FastChoice<\/a>.<\/p>\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"federal-perkins-loan\">Federal Perkins Loan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Federal Perkins Loan Program <strong>ended Sept. 30, 2017.<\/strong> If you already have a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/types\/loans\/perkins\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Perkins Loan<\/a>, contact WSU Financial Aid if you have any questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you graduate or drop below half-time enrollment, you have 9 months before you must begin making loan payments. <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/borrower.ecsi.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">Educational Computer Systems Incorporated<\/a> (ECSI) is the loan servicer for Federal Perkins Loans for WSU students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perkins Loan borrowers will receive an email from ECSI with instructions on how to complete exit counseling online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student loans allow you to spread the cost of education over time.
