Apply for Housing

Whether you are new to WSU or a current student returning to the halls, the Housing & Residence Life office is happy to help you through the process.

All students living in the residence halls must be admitted to WSU or MSC Southeast and enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester.

When Can I Start Applying?

We began accepting applications for Fall 2020 on Monday, Sept. 16.

The sooner you complete your application, the more likely you’ll get the hall and room you prefer-- especially for high-demand suite-style units in Haake and Kirkland Hall.

To access the housing application, you will need your StarID and password. If you need assistance with your Star ID, call the Minnesota State Help Desk at 1.877.466.6728.

If you are interested in summer housing, the application process is a little bit different.

Are you starting your college career at WSU in Fall 2020?

New-entering freshmen live in all of our residence halls except Kirkland and the East Lake Apartments. Transfer students live in all of our residence halls.

However, if transfer students have 24 credits or more, they have the option of selecting a room in Kirkland Hall or the East Lake Apartments as well.

These are the steps to sign up for on-campus housing.

1. Start Your Application in StarRez

Access your StarRez Housing Portal through Student eServices.

  1. Login with your StarID and password.
  2. Choose “Housing & Dining” in the left hand tool bar.
  3. You will be prompted to re-enter your StarID and password.

Once you are logged into your StarRez Housing Portal, click on “New Student Application” and complete the preliminary application steps until you reach the “Initial Application Complete” page.

2. Submit Your $250 Pre-Payment to Guarantee Your Spot

To complete the housing application, you will have to sign the Agreement for Housing & Dining and submit a $250 pre-payment.

Only once this payment is received will we guarantee you a space in one of our residence halls.

The Agreement will be available within the application in StarRez.

Applicants over 18 years of age can electronically sign their Agreement within the application. Applicants under 18 years of age will need to have a parent or guardian sign in addition to their own signature and upload the Agreement into the application.

3. Choose Your Roommate

Starting Dec. 1, 2019, you will be able to login into your StarRez Housing Portal through Student eServices to access the Roommate Search feature.

This is an optional process if you would like to find a roommate.

Within the Roommate Search feature, you can actively search for a potential roommate and receive recommendations for potential roommates based on lifestyle questions you fill out in the initial portion of your application.

Then you can message that person within the StarRez Housing Portal to get to know them better.

The Class of 2024 Facebook Group is another good way to get to know you future classmates and find a roommate.

Once you and another person have decided to be roommates, you will need to confirm your roommate request.

  • You can confirm up to one (1) roommate
  • Roommates must be confirmed by May 1, 2020 in order to receive the same time slot to select a room
  • A time slot for room selection will be given based on the average of the applications received for confirmed roommates

4. Choose Your Room

When you receive your time slot, you will be able to access the room selection portion of your application on your StarRez Housing Portal.

From there, you can filter preferences based on what hall or type of room you would like to live in. You will then be able to view open spaces meeting that criteria and from there, select your space for 2020-2021.

May 1: Last Day to Get the Option to Choose a Room

This is the last day for students to submit their housing application and $250 pre-payment in order to receive a time slot in June to select their own room.

Students who submit their application and payment after May 1st will be assigned a room by our office staff in mid-June. Once you've been assigned a room, you will be notified via your WSU e-mail address or you can view this information on your StarRez Housing Portal.

July 1-15: Room Change Process

You can request a room change between July 1- July 15 in your StarRez Housing Portal under "Housing Forms". If we are able to accommodate your room request prior to move-in day, you will be notified via your WSU email address.

5. Choose Your Meal Plan

Meal Plan options are based on your room assignment. Once you select your room in early summer, you will be able to choose your meal plan.

Students who do no select a meal plan by July 15 will be assigned a 14 meal/week plan to start the school year. Students can lower their meal plan by going to the Housing Office (235 Kryzsko Commons) if done so by Sept. 4, 2020 at 4:30 pm. Students may increase their meal plan at any time.

Meal plans are not available during the summer.
