Overview of WSU's Search Process
Every search begins with the development a complete job
description. The job description is the foundation for job advertisements and
the various tools we use to screen applicants. After the position is approved a
search committee is formed. Every search is conducted by a committee, which
means candidates will be interviewed by a group of people. Dependent on the
type of the position, search committee volunteers are solicited pursuant to
union contracts and department procedures.
Once the application deadline has past, each member of the search committee evaluates every application. The completeness of the application and skill applicability are important evaluation criteria. The committee meets as a whole to determine the individuals who will be selected for telephone and/or campus interview. Some positions include both a telephone and campus interview. Finalists are approved and invited to campus for an interview.
Candidates invited to campus will always be interviewed by the search committee. Depending on the position, candidates could also meet with department representatives, other campus representatives and senior administrators. Some positions also require skill tests.
The committee submits recommendations for hire to administration. Once the recommendation has been approved, the position is offered to the recommended candidate. After the position has been accepted, the Affirmative Action Office notifies unsuccessful finalists and applicants.
