Admissions Requirements for International Students

Here is an overview of the admissions requirements for international students at WSU.

International students must meet the English proficiency requirements to succeed in their college courses at WSU.

If you do not meet these requirements, you may still apply for conditional admission to WSU.

Students transferring from a U.S. college or university

If you took a college level English class equivalent to ENG 111 at WSU, you may be exempt from the English proficiency requirement.

You must have at least 5 passes at the O-Levels. Results from A Level exams are considered for advanced credit.

WSU will give undergraduate course credit for scores of 3 or higher on Advanced Placement exams.

Students enrolled in International Baccalaureate programs will be given credit for higher level examinations.

A student will receive 3 or more course credits for scores of 4 or higher on individual Higher Level IB exams.

If you earn an IB diploma, you will be granted 6 undergraduate course credits for scores of 4 or higher on each Higher Level IB exam.

You will receive 2 undergraduate course credits for scores of 4 or higher on each Standard Level IB exam.

The African system and WAEC

This system includes Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liberia.

Senior School Certificate

  • West African Examination Council examination results (WAEC)
  • Senior School NECO Certificate and Access card (Scratch card)


Higher Secondary Certificate Award (HSC) by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education


Upper Secondary Graduation Certificate with specialization noted and National College Entrance Examination (NCEE)

Senior School Certificate with 2.5 GPA


General Secondary Education Certificate or Technical Secondary Education Diploma


Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) or Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC)

Senior School Certificate Examination offered by CBSE is also acceptable.


Upper Secondary School Leaving Certificate (academic or vocational)

National Centre for University Entrance Examination


Higher Secondary Education Certificate with 50% passing marks

South Korea

High School Certificate awarded upon completion of 3 years of academic high school

Saudi Arabia

General Secondary Education Certificate

Sri Lanka

General Certificate of Education Advanced Level

ACCRAO comparable to U.S. high school diploma
