The Endocrine System

Along with the sympathetic branch, the endocrine system sets into motion the following pathway of events, each involving the flow of specific hormones to very specific sites in the body.*

Endocrine System

  1. Hypothalamus in the brain stem activates the pituitary gland
  2. Pituitary gland releases hormones which flow to the adrenal gland.
  3. Adrenal glands release adrenaline, cortisone, & other steroids into the bloodstream, resulting in:
    • general metabolism rate increases
    • white blood cell count decreases
    • body's production of specific antibodies decreases

As an aside, then, we should note that two major disease-fighting mechanisms in the body are suppressed as a consequence of stress, and therefore the risk of contracting disease increases.
