{"id":4258,"date":"2023-12-28T09:19:06","date_gmt":"2023-12-28T15:19:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/?page_id=4258"},"modified":"2024-02-26T11:24:51","modified_gmt":"2024-02-26T17:24:51","slug":"english-course-placement","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/support\/advising-services\/determine-course-placement\/english-course-placement\/","title":{"rendered":"English Course Placement"},"content":{"rendered":"\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<p>It\u2019s recommended to complete the required English course in your first year because you need solid reading and writing skills to be successful in college courses\u2014 no matter your major.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most students enroll in ENG 111, but you could start in ENG 112 if you transfer credits for&nbsp;an equivalent writing course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&nbsp;do not meet the placement criteria for ENG 111, you will have to take ENG 099 to develop the skills you\u2019ll need in college-level English courses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">ENG 111<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">ENG 112<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">ENG 111<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ENG 111 \u2013 College Reading and Writing<\/a> is a 4-credit writing course that\u2019s offered every semester.<\/p>\n<p>WSU recommends students complete this course during their first year.<\/p>\n<p>Most students at WSU fulfill the GEP requirement by completing this class.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">ENG 112<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/w3.winona.edu\/DataServices\/WSUCatalog\/859\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ENG 112 \u2013 Research Writing<\/a>\u00a0is a 1-credit writing course.<\/p>\n<p>This course is designed for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Students who have already completed a 3-credit writing course from another institution and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/admissions\/apply\/transfer-credits\/\">transferred those credits to WSU<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Students who scored a 4 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) Language and Composition exam<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Your Degree Audit must indicate that the requirement has been met through your transferred course(s).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n<\/div>\n\n        <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                            <div class=\"h3\">Test Scores &amp;
