{"id":913,"date":"2024-12-18T09:22:37","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T15:22:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/?page_id=913"},"modified":"2024-12-18T09:22:38","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T15:22:38","slug":"employment-information","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/support\/international-services\/employment-information\/","title":{"rendered":"Employment Information"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-text-intro wp-block-paragraph\">F-1 students are able to work on campus and off campus in certain situations.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most visas which allow for study in the U.S. also allow for some work authorization. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For F-1 visa holders, the intent is to study and there are work restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a visa other than F-1, please speak with your immigration lawyer, program director, or the International Student and Scholar Services Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn more about&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/studyinthestates.dhs.gov\/students\/work\/working-in-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\">rules for employment in the U.S<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n    <div class=\"panel panel--white\">\n        <div class=\"panel__container\">\n            <div class=\"panel__intro\">\n                        <\/div>\n            \n\n<div class=\"wsu-block tabs\">\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-nav\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-1\">On-Campus Employment<\/button>\n<button class=\"tabs__toggle\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-expanded=\"false\" id=\"tabbed-2\">Off-Campus Employment<\/button>\n    <\/div>\n\n    <div class=\"tabs-content\">\n        <button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">On-Campus Employment<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>To work on-campus, an F-1 student is follow these rules:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You must maintain valid F-1 status<\/li>\n<li>You can work up to 20 hours per week while school is in session<\/li>\n<li>You can work full-time during holidays and vacation periods if you are registered for the next academic semester. This is a WSU policy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are transferring to another school, you are no longer able to work on campus on the day that your SEVIS record is transferred to the new school<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<button class=\"tabs__mobile__toggle\">Off-Campus Employment<\/button>\n<div class=\"tabs__content__item\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><div><p>Under certain conditions, you may be able to work off-campus to gain practical training experience or due to economic need.<\/p>\n<p>You may not begin the employment unless you have received official authorization from ISSS or the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>Practical training is work permission to obtain on-the-job training in the student\u2019s field of study. Watch for events on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WSUInternationalServicesOFFICE\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WSUInternationalServicesOFFICE\/\" target=\"_blank\">WSU ISSS Facebook<\/a>&nbsp;with more details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/winona.joinhandshake.com\/login\" target=\"_blank\">Handshake<\/a>&nbsp;to look for on-campus jobs and off-campus internships. WSU Career Services can help you write a resume, prepare for an interview and get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/support\/career-services\/job-internship-search\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2327\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">other&nbsp;job search support<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other Employment Authorizations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Severe Economic Hardship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/newsroom\/immigration-relief-in-emergencies-or-unforeseen-circumstances\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/newsroom\/immigration-relief-in-emergencies-or-unforeseen-circumstances\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">severe economic hardship<\/a> circumstances happen, you may apply to the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for authorization to work off-campus. F-1 students are only allowed to work off campus when pre-approved by USCIS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Please talk to International Student and Scholar Services before submitting an application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Special Relief<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In emergency situations, the Department of Homeland Security will issue an announcement for citizens from a specific country to be authorized for additional work authorization, called <a href=\"https:\/\/studyinthestates.dhs.gov\/students\/travel\/special-student-relief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Student Special Relief <\/a>(SSR).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;An application through USCIS is required for off-campus work in these situations.
