{"id":931,"date":"2024-12-18T09:22:12","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T15:22:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/?page_id=931"},"modified":"2025-02-10T16:14:22","modified_gmt":"2025-02-10T22:14:22","slug":"curricular-practical-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/student-life\/support\/international-services\/employment-information\/curricular-practical-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Curricular Practical Training"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curricular Practical Training (CPT) allows F-1 students to complete off-campus internships while attending classes. Authorization for CPT must be obtained through the International Student and Scholar Services Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you&#8217;ve received approval from the ISSS office, you can begin your internship. You can only work during the dates listed on page 2 of your new I-20.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Eligibility for CPT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To use CPT, you must meet the following requirements:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You must have been enrolled in school full-time for at least 1 year on valid F-1 status&nbsp;(with limited exceptions)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>CPT employment must be an integral part of your degree program or major program course requirement. CPT authorization is not available for minor courses or non-major electives.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You must have received a qualifying job offer before you submit your CPT authorization request&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your job offer must be in your major or field of study&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Both paid and unpaid internships, practicums, etc. must have CPT approval<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Volunteering might require CPT approval. Check with the DSO or PDSO.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exchange students and non-degree students are not eligible for CPT.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Review the <a href=\"https:\/\/studyinthestates.dhs.gov\/students\/training-opportunities-in-the-united-states\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">full details about CPT eligibility.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply for CPT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Meet with your academic advisor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/CPT-Reporting-Form.pdf\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.winona.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/CPT-Reporting-Form-fillable-2019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CPT Request Form<\/a>\u00a0(PDF)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acquire a job offer letter which includes:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>job title <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>start and end date of employment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>number of hours per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>wage or salary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>job description<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>location of employment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit the CPT Request Form and job offer letter to ISSS in person or by email is@winona.edu at least 1 week before the requested start date for CPT<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Part-time vs Full-time CPT<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CPT can be full time (more than 20 hours per week) or part time (less than 20 hours per week). Most students work part-time during the semester or full-time during the summer while on CPT. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a student plans on applying for OPT after they graduate, they can only use less than 364 days of full-time CPT. You will not be able to use OPT if you work for 12 months on full-time CPT.
