20 Winona State students/clubs will win $1000 scholarships

Attention all rising YouTubers, budding digital photographers and artists both visual and aural: Aspen Capital and Winona State want to give 20 WSU students $1,000! Okay, you will have to earn the scholarship, but the method to earn it is fun, interesting and will make use of your favorite skills.


Attention all rising YouTubers, budding digital photographers and artists both visual and aural: Aspen Capital and Winona State want to give 20 WSU students $1,000! Okay, you will have to earn the scholarship, but the method to earn it is fun, interesting and will make use of your favorite skills.
Students can submit entries to any of these four exciting categories:

  • Digital Photography
  • Laptop Cover Skin
  • eFlick (short video/commercial)
  • Jingle (short audio commercial).
Clubs are encouraged to participate! Enter as many times as you wish although you may only win one scholarship.

What is this year’s theme?

This year’s theme is Creativity and Innovation. Recreate what's been created, your way, or create something new. Show us how technology can make your dreams come true! Use it to create unique photos, videos, jingles or laptop cover skins. We want you to show us how technology has changed the way the world works for you and how you can use it in innovative, creative ways.

Who is eligible?

Part-time or full-time students in the eWarrior Digital Life & Learning Program are eligible. (Hint: if you have a WSU laptop and tablet, you are enrolled in eWarrior.) Clubs/teams are encouraged to participate!

When are applications due?

Entries must be submitted by midnight, Friday, January 19, 2018.

You must use this form to submit your entries for these three events:

  • Digital Photography
  • Laptop Cover Skin Competition
  • Jingle Competition

Remember to attach your entry! Entries can be submitted at any time up until January 13, 2017.

Submission: e-Flick Competition Only

  • All entrees must be submitted via YouTube. If you do not have a YouTube account, please create one for this competition.
  • Email the link to your entry, your name(s) and Warrior ID(s) to DLC@winona.edu. Please include a paragraph detailing the content of your entry.
  • Make sure your video on YouTube can be viewed by the "Public"

Clubs must submit the form above along with the required club form.

Aspen Capital has partnered with Winona State University’s eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program since 2000, providing WSU students with the latest laptops and tablets. As part of Aspen Capital’s commitment to WSU students, the eWarrior scholarship competition was created, awarding one $1000 scholarship the first year.

For the 2017-18 scholarship competition, Aspen Capital has generously donated $20,000, enabling us to provide 20 students or clubs with $1000 scholarships.

How are scholarship winners chosen?

Winner(s) in each category will receive a $1000 scholarship provided by Aspen Capital. Winners will be announced after Winter Break. The number of scholarships given in each category depends upon the number of entries. A total of 19 will be awarded.


Digital Photography and Laptop Cover Skin projects will be judged on:

  • Creativity – 40 points (40%)
  • Visual appeal/photographic quality – 30 points (30%)
  • Represents WSU – 30 points (30%)

eFlick and Jingle projects will be judged on:

  • Use of the eWarrior theme – 20 points (20%)
  • Overall impact (inspiring, persuasive, informational) – 20 points (20%) Creativity – 20 points (20%)
  • Memorable content and delivery – 20 points (20%)
  • Clear message – 20 points (20%)


Who chooses the scholarship winners?

The WSU eWarrior Digital Life & Learning Scholarship Committee includes representatives from WSU and Aspen Capital. 

What are the rules?

  • You must be a WSU student enrolled in the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program.
  • Entries must be submitted by midnight on January 19, 2018.
  • Entries must be 100% original.
  • Only entries that follow the exact specifications for each category will be considered. (Specifications for each category are provided below on this webpage.)
  • All entries must be created/edited on WSU devices (laptop/tablet) or your phone.
  • Use only WSU supported software or software that is freely accessible to all.
  • Each person or club may submit as many entries as you wish but can only be awarded one scholarship.
  • Scholarships will be awarded for Spring Semester.
  • Winners are required to attend a luncheon with your benefactor, Aspen Capital. (casual dress)
  • The WSU eWarrior Digital Life & Learning Scholarship Committee reserves the right to disregard entries that are not complete or are inappropriate.
  • All entries are covered by a Creative Commons License – free copyright agreements that allow any individual to publish and maintain creative possession of their own original materials (such as videos, images, etc.) while allowing others specific levels of access and use. For example, a musician could secure their own copyright for their music, but allow others to remix their songs and distribute them as long as they shared them without commercial interest. In regard to this scholarship competition, WSU can use your entry but you retain the sole rights to use it anywhere else.

What if I don’t know how to create a video or use the software needed for my project?

The Digital Learning Commons (DLC) offers support to help you get the most out of the programs and apps on your laptop and tablet.

Specifications for Digital Photography entries

Take a photo with your tablet or phone.

  • Format: *.jpg or *.png
  • Size: 8”x10”, 300 dpi
  • Editing: Must use a WSU tablet or your phone to take the picture. If you do not have a WSU tablet you can rent one in Somsen 207. Editing may be done on your WSU laptop, WSU tablet or your phone. You may use any application to enhance your photo that is freely accessible to all WSU students.

Specifications for Laptop Cover Skin entries

Use your creativity and imagination to design a laptop cover that the eWarrior Digital Life and Learning Program might use in the future; covers are removable vinyl “skins” for protecting and customizing laptops. For more information about laptop covers see www.skinit.com. Use an original, customized photograph or design your own image using any application that is available on your tablet or laptop or freely accessible to all.

  • Format: *.jpg
  • Size: 13”x9”
  • Editing: Creating and editing may be done on your WSU laptop or tablet. You may use any application to enhance your photo that is freely accessible to all WSU students.
  • Logo: Include the official WSU logo in the design; the logo must be 1”x1” or larger. Review logo standards and download an approved logo.
  • Color: If you use purple in your design, you must use the official WSU color -

Specifications for eFlick entries

Create a 30 or 60 second video/commercial using the video camera on your WSU tablet or phone. Edit the video on your WSU laptop or tablet and publish it to YouTube. If you do not have a YouTube account, please create one for this competition. Make sure your YouTube video has a “Public” privacy setting.

If you work as a team and win each of you would receive a scholarship - up to four on a team.

Email the YouTube link with a short description of your entry to dlc@winona.edu. Be sure to include your name(s) and Warrior ID(s).

  • Format: YouTube video created with WSU supported software or software that is freely accessible to all.
  • Length: 30 seconds or 60 seconds
  • Tone: Nothing dark, no swearing or vulgarity.

Specifications for Jingle entries

Use your WSU tablet, laptop or your phone to create a radio commercial with singing, limericks, talking, music, effects to show off your creativity.

If you work as a team and win each of you would receive a scholarship - up to two on a team.

  • Format: MP3 created with WSU supported software or software that is freely accessible to all, e.g. GarageBand, Audacity
  • Length: 30 seconds or 60 seconds
  • Tone: Nothing dark, no swearing or vulgarity.
