Meeting Minutes of April
21, 2004

I. Call to order-the meeting was called to order at 3:36pm by Chair Charla Miertschin

II. Adoption of agenda, adopted by consensus.

III. Approval of minutes of April 7, 2004 (available at http://www.winona.edu/ifo/a2c2mintues/) m/s Summa/Shields to approve, motion passed.
A. Note: BIOL 409 General Microbiology, approved by A2C2 as an oral flag on March 24, should have been listed as 4 SH and not 3 SH.

IV. Chair’s report
A. The final USS meeting of the semester was on April 14, 2004.
B. This is the final A2C2 meeting of the semester and is after the last faculty senate meeting. Items approved at this A2C2 meeting may not be heard by senate until next fall.
C. President Krueger seemed receptive to senate’s motion to give the A2C2 chair reassigned time at Meet & Confer on April 12. Discussion on next years chair. m/s Schumacher/Paulson to hold an election after Professor Thompson volunteered to be A2C2 chairperson next year. Motion passed. Richard Shields nominated Ed Thompson. m/s Shields/Schumacher to close nomination.  Motion passed.   Much discussion was held regarding changes in A2C2 membership each year and that election was not scheduled.  Ed Thompson was elected as the new Chairperson of A2C2 for the 2004-2005 academic year.

V. General Education Course Substitution Requests
A. Meghan Evans - MUS 100 Understanding Music (3 SH) from UW-River Falls, HIST 1624 US History to 1865 (4 SH) from RCTC, and WSU Early Intervention Program - WSU Nursing/Olmsted County Public Health (70 contact hours) for Different Culture.- Motion to approve substitution request was tabled at previous meeting.

m/s Summa/Boseker to untable motion to approve. Motion passed. There was mention of testing out of Spanish as another option. Problem revolves around the different culture ‘experience’ not being a class, but more closely resembling ‘life experience’. Motion to approve the course substitution request failed.

VI. University Studies Subcommittee (USS) report, J. Paul Johnson from 4/14/04. Courses listed under A and B passed subcommittee unanimously.

C. USP Course Substitution Request
1. Zachary Mentch, ART 102, Art Appreciation (2 SH) from University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, for Arts & Sciences Core: Fine & Performing Arts. USS unanimously approved request for this student only. Director Johnson, though, will pursue the question of whether such courses should in the future be generally transferable to Fine & Performing Arts rather than, or in addition to, Humanities.  Motion to approve subcommittee recommendation passed.

VII. Notifications
A. US Notification: MCOM 300 Mass Media Law (3 SH) - Critical Analysis flag.
B. One-time course offering: PSY 391 Special Topic: Family Therapy (3 SH), Fall 2004.
