Nursing Sigma Theta Tau International 

Kappa Mu Chapter Scholarly Grant

 Guidelines

2012-2013

Purpose of this guideline:To assist Kappa Mu Chapter members with expenses related to a scholarly project and communicate the process for application submission for distributing a Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Chapter Scholarly Grant of $500 annually.  Expenses may include and are not limited to items such as presenting at a professional conference, data collection activities, evidence-based practice resources, and/or dissemination and publishing costs.

Eligibility:

  • Applicant must be an active member in good standing of Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Chapter.  Specific requirements include:
    • Payment of dues within the past year to Sigma Theta Tau International and Kappa Mu Chapter, and
    • Attendance to at least one meeting of Kappa Mu Chapter in the past two years

or has a history of having been an officer within the organization.

  • Applicant must demonstrate professional nursing leadership qualities
    • May include current leadership role, professional nursing organization membership and involvement, or demonstrated leadership on work unit such as committee membership and/or charge nurse role.
  • Applicant must submit three letters of support, one of which must be from another active Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Chapter member and one from a co-worker.  The letters must focus on the applicant’s professionalism, leadership, and scholarliness.
  • Applicant must submit a completed contact information form and a cover letter describing his or her qualifications to Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Chapter with a plan for his or her use of the grant, including a 1-2 page essay describing the project with a statement of intent as to the expected utilization of the funds, and including a budget.  Evidence of formal approval for the project or study e.g. IRB approval if applicable.  Electronic submission required.
    • The project for which the grant is requested must be scholarly in nature and either research/evidence or education-based.
  • The recipient of the award will receive the first $300 upon the approval by the Chapter Board and the remaining $200 after presenting to the chapter the outcomes of the project.

Dissemination of Results:

  • The recipient will give a presentation at a Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Chapter event/meeting summarizing his or her project and the outcomes. If he or she is unable to give an oral report, he or she will need to provide a written report to the chapter.  After the chapter has received the presentation/report, the remaining $200 will be awarded.

Selection Process:

  • Sigma Theta Tau International Kappa Mu Selection Committee will make the selection of the recipient by reviewing the submitted materials. .  A scoring system will be applied to applicants’ content.
  • The award shall be given to the recipient who meets the qualifications listed above and received the highest score. The award is given annually and all applicants, including the current recipient, must reapply each year for the award; the award is not automatically renewable. The award is to be made only if there is a qualified candidate, and adequate funding available.

Deadlines:

The application must be received by the Chairperson of the Selection Committee by December 9, 2012 with notification of the award to occur by mid-January.  The presentation summarizing his or her project and the outcomes should occur in May at a Spring Chapter year-end research meeting.
