Poster #108 - Antibiotics in Commercially vs. Organically Farmed Chicken Eggs Laura Senefeld Faculty Co-author: Dr. Jeanne L. Franz The use of antibiotics in consumer foods is all too common. Research is being done by many scientists about the effects of antibacterial resistance in humans and livestock. Research conducted for this lab focuses specifically on egg producing chickens. A standard curve has been developed using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). This curve can later be used to efficiently and accurately collect data. Progress is being made in extracting antibiotics from an egg matrix and verifying the standard curve for better precision and confidence in results. Future work would involve several repeated trials and researching other environmental health effects of antibiotics in chickens from resistance to ground water contamination. |
