Poster #33 - Formation of New Polyphosphonium Salts from bis(diphenylphosphino)acetylene or bis(diphenylphosphino)butane with α,α’-dibromo-p-xylene Celia Frieler Faculty Co-author: Dr. Thomas W. Nalli The goal of this research was to study the reaction of bisphosphines, bis(diphenylphosphino)acetylene (1a) and bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (1b) with α,α’-dibromo-p-xylene (2), to produce polyphosphonium salts, (3a) and (3b). Polymers containing phosphorus-carbon bonds and phosphocation centers have generated some interest recent years, in part, due to their ability to function as anion exchange resins. Comparison of polymer NMR spectra (DMSO-d6) to smaller model compounds, prepared by reacting benzyl bromide (PhCH2Br) with (1a) and (1b), allowed assignment of 1H and 31P NMR resonances.
