The Openness to Diversity at Winona State University

Jacob Hite

Faculty Mentor: Kara Lindaman

Winona State currently has approximately 8,000 students enrolled over its two campuses in Winona and Rochester, Minnesota. Of these 8,000 students, 91% are Caucasian students, 3% are International Students, and 6% are multicultural students. In an effort to understand the disparities, research is being conducted to understand the “openness to diversity” of the student body of Winona State. It is thought that the Winona State Campus is minimally open to diversity, based on the study conducted by Oscar Villalpando in his paper Comparing the Effects of Multiculturalism and Diversity on Minority and  White Students' Satisfaction with College. To answer this question, a survey of the WSU Student Body has been conducted in order to quantify student’s attitudes towards diversity in their community through the variables of age, years in attendance at WSU, gender, student status, housing, major of study, religion, native language, political views, and previous culture before attendance at WSU.
