Oral Presentation #G5 An Exploration of the Disconnection Within Contemporary Native American Art Mallory Prise Faculty Mentor: Vittorio Colaizzi Contemporary Native American art is a complex field that does not adhere to any specific narrative or guidelines. It consists of a broad range of ideas, styles, subjects, media and more that are only connected by a single thread; a Native American artist creates all of them. However, through observing the creation, study and critical analysis of Contemporary Native American art, a disconnected pattern becomes apparent. In this ever-changing world, these observations also stress the importance and significance of cultural identity to these people. However, it should not be the one, unifying theme in this diverse field. In the end, a contradiction about so called Contemporary Native American art stands. With its lack of narrative, does this subject exist even though Native American identity is crucial to these artists? |
