Communication Studies at Winona State UniversityIn Communication Studies, we examine human communication between and among people, not only In one-on-one or workgroup/work team settings, but also in more formal settings, like presidential and other public speeches. We also emphasize students’ knowledge of the scholarship of the discipline, and work on enhancing writing and research skills as well as presentation abilities. At some universities, although not at WSU, you would find Mass Communication and Communication Studies housed in the same department, but they would still likely be separate majors. Our department mission is to prepare students to meet complex communication challenges across cultural, organizational, relational and rhetorical contexts in the dynamic twenty-first century by: introducing them to relevant theories and concepts and also providing skill-building, collaboration, and scholarship experiences to promote conscious communication competence in their personal and professional development. To this end, as faculty, we seek to model positive professional communication practices, a respect for diversity, and a commitment to service and lifelong learning.
