Personal Statement

I joined the faculty at Winona State University in Fall 2023. I grew up in the area around La Crosse, Wisconsin, but have lived many places since including:

  • California
  • Washington
  • New York
  • Montana
  • Virginia
  • Delaware
  • South Korea
  • Ohio
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee

When I’m not thinking about how to make attending class fun, I enjoy traveling in my 2008 Honda Accord with a moon roof while listening to Yacht Rock radio. I enjoy grass roots everything.

Professional Statement

As a scholar of media and narrative, I’m interested in how people tell stories that provide universal appeal. I’m currently working on a paper relating the U.S. military budget and the movies of Tom Cruise. My dream has been to teach a class on the career of Tom Cruise and his relationship to militarism and masculinity.

My research has been published in Peace Studies Journal, The Journal of Media and Cultural Studies, and Global Media Journal.

My favorite topics for classroom discussion are what it’s like being a young person today, what military service means with the United States being a current colonial power, and the future of political discourse.
