WSU Goes Green
In May 2007, Winona State University's (WSU) president, Dr. Judith Ramaley, signed the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment Winona State's Climate Action Plan commits our university to "climate neutrality" meaning the "University will have zero impact on the Earth's climate." This neutrality will be achieved by using measures to lessen Green House Gas (GHG )emissions. A temporary Sustainability Coordinator initiated standards for action. A campus-wide Climate Commitment Committee was formed. Many active sub-committees, shown below, emerged in the first year.
The initial team completed a 2007 inventory of WSU's Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions from electricity and heating and an inventory of Scope 3 emissions to be updated every two years. WSU, as a partner of Sustain Winona, selected ISO 14001 as a tracking mechanism of goals and actions. In June 2009, an auditor from Purdue University approved the Sustain Winona Environmental Management System Plan. Check purple tabs for current subcommittee work The Committee welcomes all students to become involved. Call 457-2961 or those listed on the committee on the gray bar to the left.
Academic Programs for Sustainability Committee, a committee launched in late 2009 and chaired by Jeanne Franz of Chemistry, introduces how sustainability, as a topic, belongs in a WSU transdisciplinary curriculum during scheduled meetings with interested faculty.
The 2010 Transportation Schedule covers all aspects of travel in and from Winona. It is a great tool to keep you moving without the expense of maintaining a car on campus.
