Music Program Admission

All incoming students who wish to major or minor in music at WSU must perform an audition

Auditions for admission into the music program and for scholarships are held every year during the spring semester.

Admission Requirements

If a student is majoring in music, they must also be interviewed by a professor in their major.

Students electing a performance major (BMus Performance) must pass a performance review at the end of the first year to receive full acceptance into the performance degree program. Methods of assessment include:

  • Juries
  • Recitals
  • Written exams

Students will receive a letter confirming their status. If admitted, the student will enter either as a music major or as a major with Probationary Status (at the discretion of performing area full-time faculty and if sufficient room is available in the applied studio).

Transfer Students

Transfer students must complete the following steps for admission to the music program:

  1. Perform an entrance audition to determine level of lesson registration
  1. Complete at least 1 year of applied study at WSU for the individual degree program
  2. Complete at least 1 year in the large ensemble appropriate to the performance medium at WSU and satisfy ensemble requirements as stated in the WSU catalog
  3. Perform all recitals required for the degree program at WSU (after at least 1 year of study with a WSU instructor)

Your faculty advisor will help you through these steps and answer any questions you may have.

Summer Registration

Students who do not declare their major or minor until summer registration will receive provisional acceptance into the program.

After completion of their audition in the spring, students will receive a letter confirming their status

Probationary Status

Music majors or minors will need to take lessons at the 060 level (credits do not count toward graduation) and may need to take the Introduction to Theory course (MUS 120) to improve their knowledge and skill levels to match a fully admitted first year music major or minor.
