Bachelor of Social Work Program Admission
Students wishing to enter the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program must complete an application process.
Admission Requirements
BSW applicants must have 60 credits in progress or completed when they apply to the program.
You must have completed, or be in the process of completing, these social work foundation courses or their equivalents:
- ENG 111 – College Reading and Writing
- CMST 191/192 – Introduction to Public Speaking
- BIOL 117 – Human Biology
- PSY 210 – Introduction to Psychology
- PSY 250 – Developmental Psychology
- SOC 150 – Introduction to Sociology
- STAT 110 – Fundamentals of Statistics
- SOCW 340 – Introduction to Social Work and Social Welfare
- SOCW 350 – Field Experience
Students must also earn a “C” or better in each of these courses.
All applicants must have an overall GPA of 2.0 and Foundation GPA of 2.5.
Apply to the BSW Program
Students must apply for Winona’s in-person program and Rochester’s hybrid program. This application is in addition to acceptance to Winona State. The BSW program admits students each semester.
To complete your application, follow these steps:
- Read through the Social Work Student Handbook (PDF).
- Download and complete the Application materials from the handbook.
- If interested, review the IV-E Child Welfare Scholar Program.
- Submit the Social Work Application Form.
Application Deadlines
Students must submit their application during the semester before they would like to start the program.
Current WSU students and students transferring directly into the BSW program from another institution (meaning no credits completed at WSU) must apply by:
- Fall start: third Tuesday in February by 3:30pm
- Spring start: first Tuesday in October by 3:30pm
If our programs can accept more students, rolling admissions for students transferring directly into the BSW program from another institution will be considered only until:
- Fall start: third Tuesday in April by 3:30pm
- Spring start: second Tuesday in November by 3:30pm
Application Decision Process
Department faculty will review all applicants’ materials and make their admission decisions.
Students will receive the decision results via their WSU email, which will include a status of Acceptance, Pending, or Need to Reapply.
