Public health professionals are vital to keeping individuals, communities, schools, and workplaces both healthy and safe.
If you want to become a health promoter, the Public Health minor at Winona State can give you the knowledge and skills you need to work in a health-related field after graduation.
This minor pairs well with many major programs, and it can prepare you for graduate school in a variety of specialties.
This program is available through WSU’s Department of Health, Exercise & Rehabilitation Science.
As a Public Health minor, you’ll learn the basics, history, and modern practice of public health.
You’ll also:
- know how diseases work and how different diseases affect communities.
- understand how physical, social, and economic factors affect people’s health.
- dive into epidemiology, health promotion, health administration, health education, and grant writing.
- explore how the burden of disease and the promotion of health is different in health care systems around the world.
Aside from major- or minor-specific requirements, you’ll need to complete additional requirements through the General Education Program (GEP) to earn your degree from Winona State University.

Winona State offers students access to First Aid and CPR certification through the American Red Cross.
You can also earn Mental Health First Aid certification through the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) to recognize early signs or symptoms that someone with a mental health challenge may have and refer them to the right support services.

Learn about health promotion in Peru, food systems in Hawaii, and health, exercise, and medicine in England and Ireland.
Or dive into the business of health care in Paris and child welfare and health systems in Jamaica.
Complement your studies and meet other students who are passionate about public health through campus clubs and organizations.
Join the Public Health Club, LeadHERS for Winona State HERS Alumni, or Medical Laboratory Science Club.
You can also become a student health and wellness advocate.
