There’s a demand for these kinds of performance analysts within a variety of job environments like professional sports, college athletics, private performance training centers, and even research. 

That’s where the hybrid Performance & Applied Sport Science master’s degree at Winona State comes in. 

This program is meant for students who recently earned a bachelor’s degree in coaching, exercise science, human performance, kinesiology, and sport and exercise.

Winona State’s Performance & Applied Sport Science program is one of the first in the region to offer a unique intersection between biomechanics, behavior change, data science, exercise physiology, and research.

What Will You Learn as a Performance & Applied Sport Science Student?

As a Performance & Applied Sport Science student, you’ll collaborate with others in a sport science team to gather, interpret, and convey complex sports and exercise data. And you’ll get experience using the technology applications used by today’s industry experts. 

You’ll also: 

  • visualize trends in training and performance 
  • provide training recommendations to stakeholders 
  • research best practices for programming and testing recommendations 
  • identify muscular imbalances that may lead to future injuries—from acute to critical 
  • create customized programming for individual athletes and whole athletic teams alike 

This program will teach you the importance of promoting mental and physical health as well as wellness safety standard practices.

Program Highlights

Flexible Coursework

Coursework is delivered mostly online, making this program perfect for anyone who wants to fit their education into their personal and professional lives.

With synchronous classes, you’ll attend class on a specified day and time for live instruction and discussions.

And with asynchronous classes, you can complete your assignments anytime, anywhere.

Clinicals & Practicum

On top of your classes, you’ll also practice what you learn by working directly with NCAA Division II athletic teams and a variety of technology.

At the end of the program, you’ll complete a 350-hour immersion experience.

You may find yourself partnering with athletics teams from Duke University, Michigan State University, University of Nevada – Las Vegas, Rice University, Indiana University, Oregon University, and more.

Research Opportunities

You’ll hone your research skills by working alongside a sport scientist in the field.

During this immersive experience, you’ll complete a faculty-supervised research project.

In this intensive project, you’ll collect, manage, and visually present data from force plates, GPS units, motion analyses, and isokinetic testing, among others.

You’ll also create programming for individuals or teams using this data.

Customized Entry Options

Earn credits that count toward both your bachelor’s degree in Strength & Conditioning and your Performance & Applied Sport Science master’s degree with the 3+2 option.

This admission pathway saves you time and money and speeds up your graduation date.

Or build on your already completed bachelor’s degree and dive right into this program with the standalone option.

Because of this program, I’ll assist the Boston Red Sox strength and conditioning staff in taking their athletes through their warm-ups and workouts, and I’ll also use technology to gather and interpret data and then give feedback on how athletes can improve their performance.

Careers & Outcomes

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, mathematician and statistician positions are expected to grow 31% within the next decade. 

Fitness trainer and instructor jobs also anticipate a 19% growth by 2031.
