Determine Course Placement

At Winona State, new students are placed in English, math and foreign language courses based on their prior coursework. It is best to start in courses that match your current skill levels to ensure academic success.

If you are not satisfied with your initial placement, you can try to achieve a higher placement or register for a course with a lower placement.

English

WSU’s General Education Program (GEP) requires all students to complete coursework that prepares them for college-level reading and writing.

Students typically are placed in ENG 111 to fulfill this requirement. However, you may be placed in ENG 112 if you have acceptable transfer credits or AP Language and Comprehension exam scores.

If you do not meet the placement criteria for ENG 111, you will have to take ENG 099. ENG 099 is a developmental, non-degree credit course that will prepare you for ENG 111.

Math

WSU’s General Education Program (GEP) requires all students to complete coursework in math and logical reasoning.

Your ACT or Accuplacer test score will be used to place you in a mathematics class. The math course you take to fulfill this requirement will also depend on your major.

If you do not meet the placement criteria for MATH 112, 115, or 117, you will have to take MATH 050. MATH 050 is a developmental, non-degree credit course that will prepare you for college-level math courses.

Students may also register for the ALEKS Preparation and Learning Program as an alternative to taking MATH 050.

Foreign Language

Students with prior language coursework or skills are encouraged to take the Foreign Language Placement Assessment. This quick test is free and will match you to the right initial course based on your current level of language proficiency.

If you start in language course above 101, you may qualify for retroactive credit for earlier language courses.
