Scholarship Opportunities


The Biology Department offers a number of scholarships for students of all ranks. Qualifications for each scholarship are given below.

Announcements are sent by the university to announce application period for these and other WSU scholarships for which you qualify.

All scholarships require full-time enrollment at WSU.

Steve & Linda Berg Scholarship

Preference for the award is a student who is entering their sophomore and has an interest in pursuing advanced studies in the broad areas associated with biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, medicine or genetics.

Qualifications include:

  1. Declared major in Biology
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.75

Lucus Calvert Memorial Scholarship

This award goes to outstanding members of the Biology Club or Tri-Beta Biological Honors society. Minimum GPA of 3.75 is required. A one-page essay is also required. Eligibility for this award is classification as a junior or senior in the next academic year.

Joe & Gladys Emanuel Scholarship

The Joseph P. & Gladys M. Emanuel Scholarship is created to encourage and support students who are majors in Biology while attending WSU. Eligibility for this award is classification as a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Criteria for evaluation, in order of importance, are:

  1. Ability to succeed in biology
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0
  3. Financial need

David Essar Scholarship

The David Essar Scholarship is created to encourage and support students majoring in Biology at WSU with an emphasis in the Pre-dentistry program. Eligibility for this award is classification as a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Qualifications:

  1. If they plan to go into the field of dentistry
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.5

A 1 – 2 page essay is also submitted as part of the application.

Cal Fremling Biology Scholarship

The Cal Fremling Biology Scholarship is created to encourage and support students in pursuit of their education at WSU. Students must be majoring in Biology with either an Ecology option or Environmental Science option and an interest in limnology. Eligibility for this award is classification as a junior or senior in the next academic year.

Criteria for evaluation, by order of importance are:

  1. A minimum GPA of 3.0
  2. Financial need

Dr. Robert Gray Biology/Ecology Scholarship

The Dr. Robert Gray Biology/Ecology Scholarship is created to encourage and support student athletes studying ecology, evolutionary biology, and/or ecological sciences in the Department of Biology.

Qualifying students must be:

  1. Active in college athletics
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.0

Award: $2,500

William E. Green Masonic Scholarship

The William E. Green Scholarship Fund will assist aspiring biologists to make the environment a better place for future generations. Eligible students are Biology majors pursuing ecology/environmental science with a classification as a junior or senior in the next academic year.

Criteria used for evaluation include:

  1. A minimum GPA of 2.75
  2. Ability/promise in biology

Applicants will submit an essay describing why they selected ecology/environmental science and include their career and personal goals.

Martin & Joyce Laakso Scholarship

The Martin and Joyce Laakso Scholarship was created for students majoring in WSU’s Biology program.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time (minimum 12 credit hours) at Winona State University
  2. Each recipient must be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.0 (4.0 = A)
  3. Each recipient must be a declared major in Winona State University’s Biology Program
  4. Each recipient must be in financial need
  5. Each recipient must have satisfactorily completed the freshman (first-year) biology sequence

Award: $2,000

Mazurkiewicz Medical Lab Sciences Scholarship

In November 2019, the Mazurkiewicz Medical Lab Sciences Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Medical Lab Science (MLS).

Criteria:

Each recipient must:

  1. Be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time, any year of study, and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester)
  2. Be a declared Medical Lab Science major; if no MLS candidates qualify or if this discipline is no longer available, a Biology or Chemistry major may be selected
  3. Have a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher

Daniel Nordquist Scholarship

The Daniel Nordquist Scholarship is created for students majoring in Biology or Chemistry (alternating awards between the two departments).

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time at Winona State University
  2. Each recipient must be classified as a junior or senior and be in good standing at Winona State University with a minimum grade point average (G.P.A.) of 3.5(4.0 =A)
  3. Each recipient must be a declared major in either the Biology or Chemistry program

James Opsahl Scholarship

The James Opsahl Scholarship is created for students majoring in the WSU's Biology program with preference given to students exhibiting interest in zoology or animal ecology. Eligibility for this award is classification as a junior or senior in the next academic year.

Criteria for qualification, in order of importance, are:

  1. Ability and promise in the field of biology
  2. Academic record (3.0 GPA minimum)
  3. Financial need

The Thomas Pietsch Scholarship is created for students majoring in Biology at WSU. Eligibility for this award is classification as a sophomore, junior, or senior.

Criteria for qualification, each of equal importance, are:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.0
  2. Completion of an essay

Lawrence A. & Rill Ann Reuter Scholarship in Biology

The Lawrence A. and Rill Ann Reuter Scholarship in Biology is established to benefit and encourage students who pursue interests in Biology. The Reuters goal for this scholarship is to recruit and inspire promising Biology students.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
  2. Recipient may be an incoming freshman or a current student
    • Incoming freshman must be ranked in the top 25% of their high school graduating class
  3. Each recipient must be a declared Biology major
  4. Preference will be given to students pursuing primary interests in Genetics, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Bio Engineering, Biochemistry, Medicinal Chemistry or Pharmacology
  5. Recipients must show great promise in the field of Biology

Award: $1,750

Bryan & Evan Sage Scholarship

The Bryan & Evan Sage Scholarship is created for students who have declared a Pre-Med or Geoscience major at WSU.

Criteria for evaluation, with equal importance, are:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.5
  2. Completed essay

Thomas Wayne Schultz Memorial Scholarship

The Thomas Wayne Schultz Memorial Scholarship is created to encourage and support students in the Department of Biology-Ecology option or Environmental Science option who is conducting research through the Large River Studies Center. Eligibility for this award is classification as a junior or senior in the next academic year.

Criteria for qualification, in order of importance, are:

  1. Minimum GPA of 3.0
  2. Ability and promise in the field of biology (environmental science related field)
  3. Essay
  4. Financial need.

Comadoll Science/Athletics Scholarship

In October 2018, the Comadoll Science/Athletics Scholarship was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Health, Exercise & Rehabilitative Services (HERS) or Nursing, who are also student athletes, with preference given to a football player.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
  2. Each recipient must be majoring in one of the following: Biology, Chemistry, Health, Exercise & Rehabilitative Sciences or Nursing
  3. Each recipient must be a student athlete; preference will be given to a football player.
  4. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need; however, financial need should not be based solely on FAFSA
  5. Each recipient must exemplify what it means to be a WSU Warrior

As part of the selection process, each applicant will complete a personal interview with his or her coach

Award: $9,000

Elmer and Louise Mattila Scholarship in Math and Science

In May 2019, The Elmer & Louise Mattila Scholarship in Science & Math was established with the Winona State University Foundation. The scholarship will benefit and encourage students who are majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Geoscience, or Mathematics and Statistics.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University
  2. Each recipient must be majoring in one of the following academic disciplines in the College of Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, Geoscience, or Mathematics and Statistics
  3. Each first-time recipient must be a student entering their Junior year at WSU
  4. The spirit of this award is to help an average student with a minimum GPA of 2.5 (4.0 = A)
  5. Preference will be given to a student who has demonstrated financial need with priority given to students who are working to help pay for college. Note: financial need shall not be based solely on FAFSA
  6. As part of the application process for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay describing the following:
    1. Describe your educational and professional goals, including life experiences which have offered insight or motivation which led you to choose your major and future career
    2. Describe your financial need and how a scholarship will make a difference
    3. Provide details regarding your current employment or history of employment
    4. Describe any special circumstances that you would like the committee to know that has not already been asked

The Camille Gilbertson Moll Scholarship in Math & Science

The Camille Gilbertson Moll Scholarship in Math and Science is established to encourage and support students majoring in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Geoscience, Math and Statistics, or Physics who are pursuing a technical career who demonstrate a strong work ethic, drive and spirit to succeed.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be enrolled in and successfully complete a minimum of 15 credits per semester (Fall and Spring) and in good standing at Winona State University
  2. Each recipient must be a sophomore, junior or senior at the time they receive the award
  3. Each recipient must have a declared major in one of the following academic disciplines:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Engineering
    • Geoscience
    • Computer Science
    • Physics
    • Math
    • Statistics
  4. Each recipient must demonstrate financial need, but need should not be based solely on FAFSA
  5. Each recipient must have a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher (4.0 = A). However, G.P.A. should not be considered primary criteria:
    • Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates motivation to succeed
    • Preference will be given to a student who demonstrates initiative and strong work ethic
  6. As part of the application process for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay describing the importance of a strong work ethic; provide examples of your work ethic and initiative

Award: $5,000

Super Gav

In September 2015, Brad and Tanya Berzinski established the Super Gav Scholarship with the Winona State University Foundation. This scholarship will benefit WSU students majoring in Biology or Chemistry, Pre-Medicine.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full-time and in good standing at Winona State University (minimum of 12 credits per semester, Fall and Spring)
  2. Each recipient must have a declared major of Biology or Chemistry, Pre-Medicine
  3. Each recipient must demonstrate strong academic achievement, as evidenced by a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale
  4. As part of the application process for this scholarship, the student must submit an essay describing the following: Super Gav made a tremendous impact on the community with his contagious smile and his fighting spirit. Describe how you will carry on Gavin’s legacy and make a difference in your community

Walter Wadewitz Scholarship

The Walter Wadewitz Scholarship is created for full-time undergraduate students majoring in Teaching Math and/or Sciences.

Criteria:

  1. Each recipient must be an undergraduate student enrolled full time at Winona State University
  2. Each recipient must be a member in good standing of the junior or senior class
  3. Each recipient must be enrolled in the University’s Teacher Education Program with a major in general science, earth science, physics, chemistry, biology or geology

Award: $2,500
