Safety Equipment

Our campus houses a wide variety of safety equipment to ensure the health and well-being of the Winona State community.

Learn more about equipment around campus so you can play your part in keeping our university safe.

Automated External Defibrillators

Each campus building has an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) in a prominent location.

Eyewash Stations & Safety Showers

Eyewash stations and safety showers are in laboratories and mechanical or boiler rooms.

Eyewash inspection and flushing is the responsibility of the department the stations are located in. Facilities Services employees conduct safety shower flushing.

Before you work with agents that pose an eye or skin exposure risk, make sure you know the location of your nearest eyewash or safety shower.

Fire Extinguishers

Nearly 1,000 fire extinguishers are located throughout campus. The fire extinguisher program is coordinated by the EHS Department, with the assistance of outside contractors (for annual inspection and maintenance) and the Security Department (for monthly inspections).

If you notice problems with any campus fire extinguishers, please contact the EHS Department.

Laboratory Hoods & Biosafety Cabinets

Laboratory hoods and biosafety cabinets are in the laboratories to protect occupants while working with hazardous chemicals or infectious agents. The hoods and cabinets undergo annual maintenance inspections.

More information on the hoods will be provided to anyone working in lab settings.

Personal Protective Equipment

WSU provides all necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) for University employees.

Questions about types, locations and availability of PPE should be directed to each respective department.

If you would like assistance determining proper PPE for a task, please contact the EHS Department.

Sharps Containers

Sharps containers are in many restrooms in each building, as well as in some laboratory settings.

Needles, scalpels, contaminated broken glass and other “sharps” must be placed in one of the sharps containers and not thrown in the regular trash.

Questions relating to sharps containers can be directed to the EHS Department.

Safety Data Sheets

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for chemicals used on campus are available via Minnesota State’s SDS e-Binder.

Minnesota State’s SDS e-Binder

To get to WSU’s campus-specific e-binder, select “Winona State University” from the “Locations” dropdown menu.

All departments’ chemical inventories will eventually be added to our e-binder.
