Leaving WSU Employment
There are many reasons employees may leave Winona State University. The Human Resources team aims to make the transition from WSU as smooth and stress-free as possible.
Prior to their separation, employees should complete the general departing procedures and follow all applicable University procedures and any bargaining agreement or personnel plan requirements.
There may be additional requirements depending on the type of separation.
Resignation
If you decide to resign your position, give as much advance notice as possible to your immediate supervisor and Human Resources.
When an employee leaves the university, it is their responsibility to:
- submit written notice (for example, “I am resigning my position of [job title] effective [date].”)
- submit leave requests and final timesheet prior to their last working day
- return keys directly to WSU Facilities Services Office (Winona) and/or Campus Safety Office at RCTC
- return laptop/tablet directly to the Technical Support Center (Winona) and/or WSU Walk-In Support at RCTC (Rochester)
- return WSU parking permit to Parking Services (Winona)
- return WSU credit card to Business Office
- return WSU library materials to Darrell Krueger Library
- return other university owned equipment, supplies and records to supervisor
- Provide Human Resources a forwarding address
- Contact Human Resources with questions
After Human Resources receives the employee’s written notice, we will provide you with details about your:
- final paycheck
- payout eligibility for vacation, sick, comp time, severance, and other benefits
- address updates
- benefit eligibility changes
- instructions to access your paystubs and W-2
Human Resources will also initiate WSU’s electronic employee separation workflow which generates tasks for the supervisor, business office, IT, security, budget, library, and facilities.
In addition to their assigned tasks in the electronic employee separation workflow, supervisors should use the WSU Employee Separation Checklist (PDF) to facilitate the employee’s transition from the department.
The decision to retire is a major life decision. The timing may rely on age, years of service, and the bargaining unit/plan from which you are retiring.
As your retirement plans take shape, you have resources available to you to assist in a smooth transition.
