Mass Communication Program Admission

To be considered for admission into the Strategic Communication graduate program, your first step is to apply for admission to the School of Graduate Studies at WSU. 

Admission Requirements

Before applying to the Strategic Communication master’s degree, you must meet the following requirements:

  • A completed undergraduate degree from an accredited institution in:
    • Advertising
    • Communication Studies
    • Marketing
    • Mass Communication
    • Public Relations
    • Other subject areas (e.g., Business, English, History, Political Science, Psychology)
  • Cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Access to a laptop or desktop computer and reliable internet connection 

We recommend applicants also have professional work or internship experience in advertising, marketing, public relations, or related fields.

If you do not have either coursework or career experience in communications, we may ask you to complete pre-requisite classes prior to starting the program to ensure your success.

Provisional Admission

If you do not meet the program GPA requirement but have a GPA of at least 2.6, you may be admitted on a provisional basis.

You may explain the circumstances that may have affected your GPA in your personal statement.

Students who have been admitted on a provisional basis must achieve at least a 3.0 GPA after their first 12 credits of Strategic Communication coursework.

Apply to the Strategic Communication Graduate Program

Once you are accepted into Graduate Studies, you must then apply to the Strategic Communication graduate program.

Application deadlines are:

  • Summer session: April 15
  • Fall term: July 15
  • Spring term: Nov. 15

Within your online application, you’ll include the following items:

  • Current resumé
  • A written personal statement, no more than 2 pages in length, that:
    • introduces yourself to the selection committee
    • explains how your academic and career experiences shaped your desire for this graduate degree
    • describes your post-graduation career goals and/or plans 
  • Contact information for 2 references from a current or former employer or professor
