Mass Communication Student Opportunities
WSU’s Mass Communication department has much to offer beyond its engaging courses.
Plenty of opportunities exist for you to get involved in extracurriculars through internships, clubs, a travel program, and more.
This is a capstone course reserved for students to complete during their final spring semester.
Looking for jobs can be intimidating. That’s why the Mass Communication Department recommends all students to complete an internship of their choice.
By doing so, students gain industry experience and expand their network before graduation.
To earn academic credit for an internship, students must complete 120 internships hours, which is equivalent to 3 credits. Most students intern during their final 2 years at WSU.
For more information, contact Dr. Tanya Ryan at email@example.com.
To arrange an internship, students should have earned at least 60 credits and have a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
You’ll need to make sure your internship follows our guidelines (PDF).
You’ll also be required to complete contract and evaluation forms (PDF) before and after your internship.
Our students have interned at a wide range of mass communication companies and organizations over the past few years.
Some students interned outside of Minnesota—like NBC News in Chicago and a sports entertainment company based in Colorado—and even outside the country—like a TV station in Cario, Egypt.
Other students completed their internships locally at:
- Big Brothers/Big Sisters
- Frozen River Film Festival
- Great River Shakespeare Festival
- Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
- Rochester (Minnesota) Magazine
- The Rochester Minnesota Post-Bulletin
- RTP Co.
In addition to the general scholarships at WSU, students in the Mass Communication programs can apply for many scholarships from the WSU Foundation.Apply for WSU Foundation Scholarships
