Why Study Photography at Winona State?
Photography is a creative way to explore the world, connect with people, and express who you are.
A single photo can tell a powerful story, raise awareness about important issues, or remind someone of a special moment.
As a photographer, you can use your voice without saying a word—just by pressing a button.
At Winona State, the Photography minor teaches you how to turn everyday scenes into eye-catching images.
You’ll learn how to shoot with purpose, work with both natural and studio light, and edit your photos using professional tools.
You’ll also get hands-on practice in our dark rooms, explore different styles and techniques, and develop your own unique portfolio.

Whatever you’re majoring in, knowing how to tell a visual story is a skill that stands out.

This program is offered through the Communication & Media and Art & Design departments.
Winona State has 2 art galleries on campus featuring unique exhibits by students, faculty, and visiting artists year-round.
What Will You Learn as a Photography Minor?
As a Photography minor, you’ll learn how to take powerful, professional-quality photos using digital and film cameras.
You’ll also:
- get hands-on experience developing and printing black-and-white film in a dark room.
- understand the secrets of natural and studio lighting.
- create photo projects that explore identity, culture, and the world around you.
- sharpen your editing skills to transform images in Photoshop.
Aside from major- or minor-specific requirements, you’ll need to complete additional requirements through the General Education Program (GEP) to earn your degree from Winona State University.

Program Highlights
As a Photography minor, you’ll take most of your classes in Phelps Hall and Watkins Hall.
In Phelps Hall, you’ll find a multimedia studio, interactive media lab, photography studio, and dark room.
You’ll also have access to video cameras (digital and old-school film), GoPros, Wacom tablets, digital cameras, light kits, and more.
Watkins Hall is home to 2 on-campus art galleries, plus a photography studio featuring professional photography equipment.
Think SLR cameras, studio lighting, large format printers, and a dark room.
Make a difference on campus and build your leadership skills by joining one of WSU’s all-university committees.
As a member of the Art Collection Committee, you’ll help choose, display, and care for meaningful art and cultural pieces. These pieces will continue to bring history, beauty, and learning to life on campus.
Apply what you learn in the classroom by traveling around the globe. At WSU, you can earn credit that applies to your degree while exploring the world.
Follow your camera (and taste buds) through Italy.
Step into real-life fairytales as you photograph the charm and history of the Czech Republic and Hungary.
