Roommate Information

When you live on campus, it’s likely you will have at least one roommate. Most of our living options are traditional double occupancy rooms. Having a roommate creates connections and can help ease the transition into college life.

Find a Roommate

If you would like to try and find someone to live with, there are a few ways you can meet other students:

  • Use the My College Roomie (MCR) app– this is a social platform that allows you to meet other Winona State students and find a roommate based on lifestyle questions such as study habits, interests, and major. Once you’ve completed your housing application, you’ll get invited to create your MCR account.
  • Introduce yourself when visiting campus for Warrior Way Day or a Registration Day
  • If you are involved in athletics, your coach might suggest you live with a teammate or another student athlete

Winona State University will never ask you to pay for a roommate matching app.

Roommate Requests

Students who want to live together must have a completed housing application (signed housing agreement and submit the $250 pre-payment) to do a roommate request.

Roommate groups for new incoming students are a maximum of two students per group (you and one friend).

This process is optional. Don’t stress if you don’t have someone to request as a roommate! Most of our students do not go through the request process and get a random roommate during the room selection process.

How Room Selection Priority Works

Room selection time slots are determined by the date you completed your housing application.

  • If you are selecting a room individually, your priority is based on your own application completion date
  • If you are in a roommate group, the time slot for your group is based on the average of both students’ housing application completion dates.

For example, Student A completes their housing application on Sept. 15 while Student B (their requested roommate) completes their housing application on Dec. 1.

The roommate group’s priority date will fall between September and December, meaning:

  • Student A’s priority will be later than if they had gone through room selection on their own (or with someone who applied earlier)
  • Student B’s priority will be earlier than if they had gone through room selection on their own

How to Request a Roommate

Roommate Assignments

If you did not request a roommate by April 1, you will go through room selection as an individual or be assigned a roommate if the process has already closed.

Once you select your room, you can view your roommate information in the Housing Portal.

We encourage you to connect with your new roommate before arriving on campus to coordinate who will bring which items and to get to know each other.
