Move In & Move Out Information
Moving In
Whether you are planning to move in at the beginning of the academic year in August or waiting until Spring semester in January, here are some general notes about moving in:
- Check your email regularly, so you don’t miss specific move-in information from your residence hall regarding where to pick up your key, traffic and parking information, and more
- View the recommended packing list (PDF)
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes
- Check what the weather in Winona will be on your move-in day and plan accordingly
Follow WSU Housing & Residence Life on social media for additional information and tips!
For Fall 2024, move-in appointments will be on Aug. 22 from 9am-4pm for all residence halls, including the East Lake Apartments. You will be able to schedule your move-in appointment starting in May after you select your room.
Move-in appointments are 15 minutes. This is a designated time for you to show up at your hall front desk and pick up your key and Warrior ID card. Once you have your key, you are free to move in and get settled in your new space.
There will be designated “Unloading Zones” for parking in front of the halls for students to unload their things. Once you unload your vehicle, you’ll need to park in a lot or on a street away from the residence halls.
Important Notes
- Check your email throughout the summer for important information on living on campus and moving in
- You will receive an email for your Hall Director or Area Coordinator about 5 days before your scheduled appointment with specific information related to parking, key pickup, etc.
- New Student Orientation, activities and floor meetings will begin on Aug. 22 at 4pm, so make sure you are moved in and settled by that time.
- Fall semester meal plans begin Aug. 22.
For Spring 2025, you can check into your room on any of the following days:
- Jan. 10, 11am-6pm
- Jan. 11, 11am-6pm
- Jan. 12, 11am-6pm
During these hours, you can go to your hall front desk to pick up your key. Once you have your key, you can move into your room. More info will be sent via email in mid-December after you’ve been assigned a room.
Spring semester meal plans begin Jan. 11.
Traffic Flow & Parking
As you approach campus on move-in day, pay attention to signs that are posted and volunteers who are helping with traffic flow.
We do not recommend you follow your GPS because many areas around the residence halls may be blocked off or re-routed to accommodate traffic congestion.
Learn more about where to drive and unload your vehicle by viewing our traffic map (PDF) and move-in day video guides.
All vehicles entering “Unloading Zones” will be given a car pass by a Welcome Crew volunteer.
All passes must include the student’s name, cell phone, and room number and be placed on the driver’s side dashboard of the vehicle.
There are 20-minute unloading zones around the residence halls.
Once you enter an unloading zone, you need to move all items out of your vehicle(s) and place onto the grass or sidewalk.
After you’ve unloaded your vehicle, please park away from the residence halls.
This can be in other WSU parking lots away from the halls or street parking.
Once you’ve parked your vehicle away from the residence halls, you can move your belongings up to your room and get settled into your new space.
Early Arrival
Move-in for Fall 2024 begins Aug. 22, by appointment between 9am-4pm.
If you need to arrive to campus before Aug. 22, you will need to go through an Early Arrival Request Process through your Housing Portal.
There are limited services available before the residence halls open. Meal plans begin Aug. 22.
If you are part of a group or team that needs to arrive before Aug. 22, you do not need to submit an individual early arrival request.
Your coach or advisor will work directly with the Housing Office staff to determine your arrival date.
The following teams and groups have designated move-in appointments:
- Aug. 10, 9am-12pm: Football
- Aug. 18, 9am-12pm: Soccer, Volleyball, Cross Country, Golf, Warrior Expedition, and Orientation Leaders
- Aug. 19: International students
- Aug. 21, 9am-12pm: Welcome Crew volunteers
International students traveling to Winona from overseas have 3 additional days at the beginning of the housing contract at no charge to coordinate travel arrangements. If more time is requested, international students will be charged $50 daily.
You can request to move in as early as Aug. 20. Requests must be submitted on your Housing Portal between June 1-Aug. 1 to be considered.
There is a $50/day early arrival fee that will be applied to your student account.
Late Stays
The housing contract for the 2024-2025 school year ends May 9 at 6pm.
If you need to stay an extra day or two, you will need to go through a Late Stay Request Process. This request form is on your Housing Portal and must be completed by April 15.
Depending on the situation and length of request, students may need to move to a designated residence hall and/or floor.
There are limited services available for students staying after May 9, including dining services.
Spring Sports Athletes
Student athletes actively participating in competition after May 9 may remain in on-campus housing until the end of the Spring season at no additional cost. Your coach will work with the Housing Office staff to determine your departure date.
Students will be required to move out of the halls one day after the end of the last competition. If more time is needed, a $50 late stay fee will be applied to the student’s account.
Spring Graduates
Students who are graduating at the end of Spring semester will be allowed to stay in their room until May 10 at no additional cost. If more time is needed, a $50 late stay fee will be applied to the student’s account.
Students will need to fill out a Late Stay Request form on their Housing Portal. Documentation will be required when filling out your request.
International Students
International students traveling overseas at the end of Spring semester are given until May 12 to stay in on-campus housing at no additional cost. This allows some flexibility when coordinating travel arrangements.
Students will need to fill out a Late Stay Request form on their Housing Portal. Travel information will be required when submitting your request.
Under approved circumstances, students may move out May 10-11.
There is a $50/day late stay fee that will be applied to your student account.
Moving Out
At the end of the academic year, the residence halls and dining services close for the summer:
- Residence Hall Closing Meetings: April 6-10
- Last Day for Food Service: May 9
- Residence Halls Close: May 9 at 6pm
We recommend that students move out within 24 hours of their last final exam to make moving out less congested.
You will need to schedule a move-out appointment on your Housing Portal by April 15. During your appointment, an RA will check your room to ensure it is in the same condition as when you moved in, and you will turn in your key.
If you visit home during spring semester, it’s a good idea to start bringing things back to make fully moving out easier. If you need to stay past May 9, you will need to request a late check-out or apply for summer housing through your Housing Portal.
Tips for Checking Out
- Make sure all your items are out of your room prior to your check-out time
- Be sure your room is clean. Basic cleaning supplies are available at your hall front desk, but vacuum cleaners are not available for check out.
- A limited number of moving bins are available in each hall
